Are you the type of person that never notices what is in a room? Is that because you truly do not care or is it because the room never changes? People can be so overwhelmed by the thought of decorating a room and it shouldn't be that way. Just start with a colorful pillow or throw. Maybe just add a vase of flowers. Even those minor things can change the look of your room.
The most important thing about decorating is to decorate for yourself. If you like it, that is all that matters. If you remember when you were a teenager and adorned your room with posters and all kinds of personal things that had meaning to you. Your parents might have had a different take on what the room looks like, BUT it made you happy.
Well as adults it is the same thing. If you get in your head worrying about what others are going to think about what you do, you will get a mental paralysis and never try anything. But who spends the most time in your space, YOU DO. People might pass through, but you live in it day after day, so it should please you. No one knows what you like better than you.
It is the same for me, I know what pleases me and that is what I do. I do not worry about trends or what's popular right now, this all passes and quickly. There is nothing wrong with decorating based on trends if the trend is something that you like and might want to keep after the trend is out of favor. Anyone remember the 70's? The Pepto Bismol pink bathroom fixtures and the avocado green kitchen appliances and let's not forget the hugely popular shag carpet trend along with wallpaper with loud patterns and both were common in every room of the house including the kitchen.
Every decade has had some claim to fame for decorating trends. After growing up with that Pepto Bismol bathroom you could not pay me to have that color in my house, but that is just me. Take Care Everyone ..... Susan
